In this “temporary life”, we spend most of our “temporary time” concerned with “temporary” issues. Many are necessary because of our “temporariness”. Satan’s lie, however, is to lead us to believe that the temporary is lasting and thereby he traps us into the pursuit and maintenance of the temporary with little thought of the Eternal.

In this day of political upheaval, and the usual "evangelical "response to it, consider the sermon preached by Scottish pastor, John Welch in 1605, just before being put in prison for not acknowledging the "divine right" of King James over the church in Scotland. There he remained until his early death at age 52. This is one of the clearest expositions of justification by faith you will ever read. And these were the words he felt most important to his people on his leaving them. Perhaps this explains the weakness of the contemporary church--we don't rightly understand who the true Enemy is! Say not, my soul, from whence His method is sublime,
Can God relieve thy care, His thoughts supremely kind
Remember that Omnipotence God never is before His time
Hath servants everywhere. And never is behind.

Nothing To Pay Francis Ridley Havergal
Nothing to pay! Ah, nothing to pay! Nothing to pay! the debt is so great;
Never a word of excuse to say! What will you do with the awful weight?
Year after year thou hast filled the score, How shall the way of escape be made?
Owing thy Lord still more and more. Nothing to pay! yet it must be paid!
Hear the voice of Jesus say, Hear the voice of Jesus say,
"Verily thou hast nothing to pay! "Verily thou hast nothing to pay!
Ruined, lost art thou, and yet, All has been put to My Account,
I forgave thee all that debt." I have paid the full amount."
Nothing to pay; yes, nothing to pay!
Jesus has cleared all the debt away;
Blotted it out with His bleeding hand!
Free and forgiven and loved you stand.
Hear the voice of Jesus say,
"Verily thou hast nothing to pay!
Paid is the debt, and the debtor free!
Now I ask thee, lovest thou Me?"
From the forthcoming 6 volume "The Complete Works of Francis Ridley Havergal".

On Dying. "I am going to the three Persons with whom I have had communion: They have taken me, I did not take Them. I shall be changed in the twinkling of an eye; all my lusts and corruptions I shall be rid of, which I could not be be rid of here; those croaking toads will fall off in a moment" - Thomas Goodwin
"God is not our God but in and through Jesus Christ. God will not show mercy unto thousands, nor unto one of all the thousands of His saints, but as they are IN Jesus Christ. God will not give us long life here, or eternal life hereafter, but IN, for, and through the Lord Jesus Christ." Isaac Ambrose 1604-1664
Think on this: Romans 2:28-29 "For he is not a Jew which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision which is outward in the flesh; but he is a Jew which is one inwardly, and circumcision is that of the heart in the spirit, and not of the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God." "This is to show that no outward walk, no demure profession, without the work of the Spirit on the heart, will do us any good. It is a blow against all that duplicity (double mindedness), all that shifty, tricky profession, with the face one way and the feet another. Now these evils are found in all professors by nature; but God will come with the hammer of His Word, and the fire of His love to His own, and make them simple, transparent, and honest to seek the witness of His Holy Spirit, the praise of God and not of men. God looks on the heart!" From "Morning Readings" by James Bourne 1773-1853

I had never heard of Edward Samuel until recently. He is relatively unknown. But what a blessing God has poured out through him. This man breathes scripture as no one I have read outside of William Romaine. He was raised in the strictest of Jewish families, his grandfather being one of the chief rabbi's in Poland. He had memorized the entire Psalms and Song of Solomon by the age of seven. In the Providence of God, he ended up in London and there came to Christ. He eventually became a baptist pastor for several years. These books are all we know of him after age 30! I recommend the Triumph of the Holy Spirit first. Samuel has an especially beautiful grasp of the Spirit's working in the sinner's heart, before and after conversion. "As Christ had many enemies to meet and combat sin, Satan, & hell, death, the grave, and the world, and conquered and triumphed over them, so the Holy Spirit has to contest and dispute every inch of territory made good against the inhabitants of the heart before He can take full possession and plant His Standard (of victory) there." "Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty." (II Corinthians 3:17) Samuel brings us to understand that every inch of true Spiritual development and growth is by the operation of the Holy Spirit through the Word of God. And that is most liberating!!

Excerpts from the books:
"When thou art considering thy love to God, and ashamed at the sight of it, then look at His. Look especially at His. Believing views of His will increase thine. Thine has nothing else to excite it, or to nourish it. Thou art not called upon to warm thyself with the sparks of Thy love to God, but with the pure constant flame of His love to thee. His is to keep up thine. His is the first cause, and thine is but the effect. The experience of His will heal all the infirmities of thine." William Romaine (1714-1795)
"The end (goal) of all our troubles must be to obtain a sense of God's eternal mercy to our souls, whatever our trouble be, whether loss or sickness, or what not. If they do not end in this manifestation of God's love in Christ Jesus to our souls, they will only end in that sorrow of the world that worketh death." James Bourne (1773-1854)
The Woman With The Book A friend's account of Gladys Aylward's life by M.A. Mijnders
So you have never heard of Gladys Aylward? Then you need to get to know her. Yes, I'm being pushy! This little lady (she was about 4'10" tall) was called by the Sovereign God of Grace to go to China and minister in the mountains of northern China just prior to the Japanese invasion and then the Communist takeover. She was extremely well prepared and well financed---NOT!! She was a mere chamber maid for a wealthy family in London when God saved her by His Grace and called her to serve Him in China. She was rejected by all mission boards, but went anyway, responding to hearing of an elderly missionary needing help. This book reads like a novel, but touches the heart deeply at the Ways of God with her. For more about her click on "Excerpts from the book".

Excerpts from the book:
Meet John Warburton. His autobiography is entitled, "Mercies Of A Covenant God." I affectionately call him my spiritually bipolar brother and mentor. His spiritual highs were in the heavenlies, but his spiritual lows were knocking on the gates of hell. But his God is a Merciful God Who remembers His people in the Eternal Covenant of redemption and they need not fear. Warburton was born in 1776 and entered the Eternal Rest in the Bosom of his Covenant God in 1857. In between, he typified the verse, "man is born unto trouble as the sparks fly upward." He was a poor weaver with a very large family. He was constantly staring the poor house in the door, but this is a testimony of The Covenant God of Providence who saves by His Grace and rules by His Providence. He became a renowned preacher who knew nothing about a theoretical theology. Everything he believed stood the test of affliction. He KNEW that his God is FAITHFUL. This book is a wonderfully wild ride. If you think you are the only one who has doubts, fears, tumults in life, spend some time with Warburton. He will constantly tell you, "God is a God of Grace and of Providence." He will drill that into your soul and stir your confidence in The Holy God of Heaven!!
Available in paperback & hardback The paperback is a continual narrative-no chapter divisions. The hardback has been re-typeset and is divided into chapters. |
Please take note of William Romaine in the "biographical sketches" section. His book, "The Life Walk and Triumph of Faith" is featured in the Classic Book Flyer. It is one of the top three books I have read in my life. It is a practical outworking of the Eternal Triune covenant of redemption from new birth to ultimate Glory. Romaine changed the Triune God from a doctrine into a living relationship for me. He beautifully lays out each Person's work in our salvation and draws the reader into worshipful praise. Also featured are His "Select Letters" and "12 Discourses Upon the Law and the Gospel". His letters turn Life, Walk and Triumph into Godly, feeling counsel to the needy. The Kingdom of Heaven Taken By Prayer William Huntington S.S. (Sinner Saved) (1740-1813)
Of illegitimate birth, raised in abject poverty, with no formal education, this is the compelling and at times wild, autobiography of a man God raised up to shake the tree of the English Great Awakening. Huntington clearly proclaimed the Sovereign Grace of God in salvation, and exposed much false fruit in this revival time. Bold for the true Gospel, many hated him and sought to defame him. William Romaine liked him to John Bunyan and said God only raises up such men once in a hundred years. Read and be amazed at what God can do with "small things".
